About This Class: I am delighted to see such nice examples of this emerging standard. One of the important things we consider when deciding whether or not to finalize a Provisional standard is whether that standard describes an animal that is distinctly different from other colors or patterns. Consider if one chose to standardize all the variations in lilac caused by different recessives: lilac, sapphire, dove, dilute lilac. They are very subtle differences and if all were standardized, there would be hardly a lilac gerbil that wouldn't match some standard color, thereby making the color mainly irrelevant. I think looking at the gerbils in this class, there is no question that the roan standard describes a gerbil that is vividly different from other gerbils.

Black Roan Female

Judges Comments:

When you flip to a gerbil's photo and literally gasp, you know you've found your winner. This girl is almost completely roaned, including her face, spine and tail, which tend to be the darkest areas. She does have one missing toenail and a rather crooked tail, but given that I am allowed to take some liberties with traditional conformation standards in an emerging-standards class, this girl clearly carries the win today.

Blue Roan Male

Judges Comments:

This is a very heavily roaned blue gerbil with solid male conformation. He is still dark at his extremities, which is permitted by the standard. Other than a slightly long face, everything is in order here. I would have loved a top-down photo to help assess the color of his spine, but clearly it didn't hold him back today.

ABC Betty SStar

Owner: Danielle Cromer, Florida, USA

Black Roan Female

Judges Comments:

Very nicely roaned with a soft blend of color in all views. Excellent tail & tuft although perhaps a slight taper just before the tuft. Very nice feminine shape. Up against stiff competition today!
