The American Gerbil Society (AGS) is a non-profit organization providing education and support to caregivers, exhibitors, breeders and enthusiasts for the ethical and humane treatment of gerbils, jirds and other rodents.

A LITTLE HISTORY

The American Gerbil Society began in 1998,  with its humble beginnings as a Yahoo! group mailing list for gerbil care. Gerbil care is still our top priority and a fundamental core value of our society. We support pet owners, breeders and rescuers by providing information on the proper care and husbandry of gerbils. Our goal is to encourage all gerbil owners to adopt only the highest standards of excellence and to encourage others to do so.

In 2002, after extensive learning & training from  gerbil organizations across the globe who had long been exhibiting gerbils at shows, the AGS held its first LIVE gerbil show in the United States. Shows are a great way to meet other gerbil enthusiasts, to chat, share stories, swap knowledge, and meet friends. And maybe win a ribbon. They are also a wonderful way to gain knowledge about gerbils, standards, colors, and how to improve our breeding techniques. More about shows.

The AGS strives towards improving the welfare of gerbils.
Our members have agreed to uphold our Code of Ethics.

As an all volunteer organization, a small donation goes a long way.

GerbILARIUMS

Showcase of various custom cages built for gerbils.

Be sure the size and type of cage is manageable and one you can keep clean. It's not all about size. Gerbils need stimulation and ideally time to explore out of the cage: gerbils love to run, climb, dig, nest, take dust baths, tunnel and chew.
