Seperating Gerbils
Libby Hanna
and Cathy Bickel
The situations under which it makes sense to separate gerbils are:
- After a surprise litter. Please see the section on surprise litters: by the time the first litter is discovered, the mother gerbil will be pregnant again, and the father should normally be left in to help raise the first litter.
- The gerbils fight
- When instructed by the vet due to contagious illness
- When separating a breeding male and female with a weaning litter
In all other situations, leave happy gerbils together. They love and need each other.

Showcase of various custom cages built for gerbils.
Be sure the size and type of cage is manageable and one you can keep clean. It's not all about size. Gerbils need stimulation and ideally time to explore out of the cage: gerbils love to run, climb, dig, nest, take dust baths, tunnel and chew.
