Like all other mammals, gerbils are affected by the toxins in smoke. In fact, because of their small size, gerbils are more likely to suffer adverse affects from second-hand smoke than larger pets.

 

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has a detailed article about the effects of second-hand smoke on pets.

Be sure the size and type of cage is manageable and one you can keep clean. It's not all about size. Gerbils need stimulation and ideally time to explore out of the cage: gerbils love to run, climb, dig, nest, take dust baths, tunnel and chew.
